Definition
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of structuring and formatting web content so that AI-powered answer engines — including ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, Google AI Overviews, and Claude — can extract, understand, and surface it as a direct answer to user queries.
Unlike traditional SEO which targets ranked blue links, AEO focuses on being selected as *the* answer. This requires clear question-and-answer formatting, unambiguous definitions, FAQ schema markup, and content structured around the questions users actually ask AI systems.
Why It Matters
As AI search engines handle an increasing proportion of informational queries, AEO determines whether your content is cited, quoted, or completely ignored by AI systems. Websites with strong AEO signals are measurably more likely to appear in AI-generated summaries.
Examples
- Structuring a page with a direct definition in the opening paragraph
- Adding FAQ schema (JSON-LD) to question-and-answer content
- Using question-formatted H2 headings ("What is…?", "How does…?")
- Writing concise, quotable sentences that function as standalone answers
